'Studious' - a Misconception

Before you read - This is a friendly article full of exceptions and inspired by personal experiences. I hope you all take it the same way! So, Go on!

Studious is a mysterious adjective. Hypothetical, yet treated very plebeian. It should be kept on a throne, with ‘Perfect’. But is used from the side shelf with clever and intelligent! (no offense to them)

So there are some crucial factors to (misconceptually) complement people with this ‘studious’. All these factors combined make someone ‘studious’. Let us have a look at them.

Studious is very commonly (wrongly) associated with another (practical) adjective, ‘Topper’. Topper is a circumstantial adjective. But more importantly, it always takes topper with it. Yes, there are many cases where topper studies a lot. But there are a lot more cases where toppers are not-so-studious. Unfortunately, we just don’t see or accept them.

Another highly affecting factor is ‘coincidences’. Whenever you call your friend, he is studying.

‘Hey bro, let’s play Ludo!’

‘Sorry, I’m studying. Can’t’

‘Hey bro, let’s watch Ludo!’

- ‘Sorry dude, I’m in the middle of Inorganic chemistry. Not now…’

‘Hey, let’s go trekking next week?’

- ‘No yaar, I have all my tuitions lined up the whole month. Can’t.’

And so on…

Here, anyone would think that the guy studying 24/7, and label his ‘Studious’. But what he doesn’t know is that his so-called studious friend has just binge-watched Lucifer and been fiercely scolded by his parents, leaving him no choice but incessantly studying and making a major misconception in his peer group.

Studious is also associated with a person’s physic! Not-so-fit people are preferred to be studious. Because people presume sports and studies ‘opposite’. They do not feel fit people, good players being good at studies. And spects make them spectacularly studious-looking.

At least in schools, the adjective also comes with punctuality. Student whose home-works, given activities are complete long before the submission date, is considered studious. Here too, only one factor is considered. However, its reasons are neglected. Like his tuitions, or strict parents. Making him an innocent pray of studious-label-inator!

Mobile also plays an important role in this labeling. In your peer group, the less you appear with mobile, the more studious you become. The less you play games, the more studious you become. The less active you are on social media, the more studious you become. Because generally, people think, if you are not using mobile, you are studying. They don’t get you playing some real game, singing, drawing, etc., etc.

Studious is different from all other adjectives in permanency. Clever, topper are all circumstantial, temporary. Today one can be topper, tomorrow maybe he won’t. However, that’s not the case with studious. Once studious, always studious! That’s permanent

Mysterious Adjective indeed! But this is how I unfolded it. After all, we all have certainly used this term and now, damn it hits us hard. Doesn’t it?

  1. Excellent, I think you have put the thoughts of every student in your blog.....People judge someone's intelligence on the basis of everything else like punctuality, or How many hours has the guy studied.....Hopefully these things will change in future and the later generation wouldnt face a kind of pressure like this !

  2. Amazing blog very interesting too that how people misuse the term studious for those who study 24/7 no matter how much they gain. According to my opinion the term studious is for those who are interested in studying different types of things, studious are those guys who study not for only exam but for there knowledge in Bharat there are two terms which will conclude this whole para those are 'pariksharthi' & 'vidyarthi' the one who are vidyarthi are best pariksharthi who bring good marks in exams and also they are the true topper but there are very few cases where the pariksharthi who only study for exams rather more for marks are topper or good gainers.
At the conclusion studious are well smart workers with a very intense hunger to learn.
